Nishiki Markets

Nishiki Market Kyoto Japan

Nishiki markets are in central Kyoto and easily accessible from Kyoto station. The market is five blocks long and packed with fresh food stalls, shops and all things food related, no wonder it’s nicknamed, Kyoto’s kitchen.

What to buy

Kyoto is known for so many foods, however, these are some of the foods recommended to sample in Kyoto; pickled vegetables, miso, tofu skin, dried bonito, deep fried fish cakes and of course matcha (green tea).

Kyoto is also famous for its sweets, in particular;

  • Yatsuhashi – cinnamon seasoned sweet dough filled with red bean paste and shaped into triangles
  • Wagashi – super cute traditional Japanese sweets usually served as part of a tea ceremony.
  • Konpeito – star shaped candy found throughout Japan but particularly famous in Kyoto.

As you walk through the market streets you will be offered taste tests and samples of foods and it is an amazing way to sample the tastes of Kyoto.

Aritsugu Knife shop

Aritsugu is a very popular knife store in Nishiki markets. It is an 18 generation family business, making swords and then knives since 1560.

We purchased a knife and they engraved my husbands name in it in Katakana for no additional charge. We had no issues at all bringing it back into Australia in our checked luggage and is the first of a number of knives we have brought back from Japan over the years.

This shop also has the most amazing array of shape cutters. These are usually used for vegetables but we have also used them for biscuits and sandwiches. They are sharp enough to cut through raw carrot easily and they never rust! I wish I had bought more and can’t wait to go back again!
