Arashiyama

Arashiyama is in the Western area of Kyoto. It is a little further away than other sites in Kyoto and can get busy particularly in autumn and sakura seasons. However, it is a beautiful area and the kids enjoyed it as there are lots of areas to explore. These were our three favourite things and they are all in walking distance of each other.

Togetsu-kyo Bridge

Togetsukyo bridge is essentially just a bridge but it gives an amazing view of the mountains, Katsura river and town. On either side of the bridge you can stroll along the riverbank or take a boat ride. There are many small shops on either side of the bridge.

Tenryu-ji Temple

On the Northern side of the bridge is the main street lined with small shops including a number of souvenir shops and a couple of bakeries. Past Arashiyama station is the entrance to Tenryu-ji temple on the left. It is free to enter the grounds, however, there is a fee to enter the gardens.

Bamboo Forest

If you leave the temple from the back you can walk through to Arashiyama park which includes the bamboo forest. The park is beautiful and there are many places to explore and an observation deck. We found a shelter and stopped for morning tea thanks to the Miffy bakery we found on the main street earlier.

The most famous part of this park is the bamboo forest. It is actually smaller than we expected so we enjoyed a little more exploring of the area afterwards.

Our kids loved exploring this area, the bridge, the park, the bamboo forest and the riverbank.

How to get here

There are three train lines that will take you to Arashiyama from Kyoto station.
JR Sagano line will take you to Saga-Arashiyama station and it is a short walk to the centre of town.
The Keifuku Arashiyama line takes you right to the middle of town at Arashiyama station which is the end of the line.
The Hankyu Arashiyama line also from Kyoto station will take you to Arashiyama station on the Southside of the Katsura River, it is then a short walk over Togetsu-kyo bridge to the centre of town.
