Nagasaki Peace Park

Peace Park Nagasaki Japan

The Peace Park in Nagasaki, is a place of remembrance of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki in 1945 during WW2. It is located near the hypocentre of the explosion and consists of two parks and Museum.

The Fountain of Peace

The black monolith commemorates the Hypocentre of the explosion. Nearby is a portion of the Urakami cathedral that was destroyed in the blast.

On the hill above the park is the atomic bomb museum. The museum stands testimony to what happened and expresses the horror of nuclear war. It looks not only at the devastation of Nagasaki but also nuclear tests around the world and highlights the wish for world peace.

Even though you will leave the museum and Peace Park slightly shocked, slightly angry and saddened, it is important not to forget the past, but learn from it. If you visit Nagasaki, the peace park is a must.

Location

Nagasaki city, North of the city centre. It is a ten minute tram ride from Nagasaki JR on tram line 1 or 3.

Who would enjoy this…

I’m not sure if enjoy is the right word, however, I think it is important for us all to remember the devastation of the atom bomb and support Nagasaki’s desire for world peace. When we went our kids were 6, 9 and 11. There are some confronting images in the museum and the older two were deeply moved.
