Himeji Castle

Himeji Castle Japan

Himeji also known as White Heron castle is one of the most amazing castles in Japan. It is one of the country’s 12 original castles and has not been destroyed by war or fire or earthquake. The castle complex is over 400 years old and was extensively restored in 2015.

Himeji castle is elegant and majestic, sitting high and proud, overlooking the surrounding landscape. The day we visited, it was a perfect winters day and the castle sat gleaming in the sunshine.

Surrounding the castle are gardens, gateways and fortified walls with arrow holes that give fascinating views. Bond fans will recognise the grounds from “You only live twice”.

At various points around the grounds are stations that allow you to view AR on your smart phone. See Princess Shiromaru or the garrison firing through the shooting holes of the wall.

On entering the main keep, you will be provided with slippers and a bag for your shoes.

Inside the castle, look out for the soldier’s hiding rooms, reinforced doors, weapons racks and trap doors below the windows to drop things onto attackers below.

As you climb higher inside the castle, the stairs become steeper and the view more spectacular with panoramic views from the top! In the middle of the castle is one massive central wooden beam that was replaced in restoration, part of the old beam is out on display in the grounds.

Who would enjoy this…

This is a beautiful castle and as one of the original castles of Japan we really think it’s a must visit if you are in the Osaka area. There’s lots for the kids to explore and our teen and pre teen boys loved learning about the trap doors and defences of the castle. Anyone interested in castles, Japanese history or Japanese architecture will love this!

How to get here

Himeji station is 1/2 hour shinkansen ride from Osaka (or an hour and half on a slower train) so it’s an easy day trip from Osaka or Kyoto.

As you exit Himeji station, the castle can be clearly seen, gleaming in the distance. It’s an impressive sight. From the station it’s a 15-20 minute walk up the main street to the castle.

On a busy day the number of visitors the castle can be restricted so arrive early to make sure that you can gain entry.

While in Himeji check out…

Mount Shosha is a temple with 1000year history located in the hillside of Himeji, you may recognise it from “The Last samurai” movie.

Kobe is about an hour train ride back towards Osaka. We went there for a late lunch of Kobe beef after spending the morning at the castle. Kobe beef is famous across Japan and although expensive is absolutely melt in the mouth delicious! Kobe is also known for its Sake breweries.
